Rioja Report 2026: Garnacha & friends – Tapping into history and modernity
Rioja is no longer the realm where Tempranillo reigns supreme. Renewed interest in viticultural history has brought other varieties to the forefront

One of the main myths debunked by Rioja’s spectacular (and exciting) shake-up since the turn of the millennium, is that the region is synonymous with Tempranillo.
The ubiquity of high-yielding Tempranillo clones, replacing field blends where multiple varieties had grown alongside each other, is relatively recent; a process that happened in the last third of the 20th century.
It’s unsurprising, therefore, that with the backlash against the Rioja region’s ‘industrialisation’ coupled with renewed interest in origin and terroir came an interest in the vineyards and varieties of yore, and in the once-dominant Garnacha in particular.
And it’s certainly not by chance that many of the Vino de Municipio or Viñedo Singular wines submitted for tasting for this year’s report were either single-varietal or Garnacha-led blends – you’ll find plenty here.
Nuance & precision
And it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Garnachas being produced in Rioja are marked by nuance, precision, delicious drinkability and an ever greater sense of place.
Those are, ultimately, the purposes of the renewed interest in the variety.
‘It surprises me that Garnacha from Rioja continues to surprise – if that makes sense!’ says Beth Willard.
‘There’s been a focus on Garnacha for quite some time and there have been wonderful wines bubbling away under the surface. Perhaps the really interesting, more recent development is the advance of more specific identities for different sub-regions, even different towns.’
Handled by mindful winemakers, Garnacha has a notable transparency, expressive of both origin and winemaking philosophy.
The realisation has impacted on the region’s wines more broadly – there are echoes of this newfound fragrant lusciousness in the finesse and genius loci (‘spirit of place’) gained in recent years by the Crianzas and Reservas (and to an extent even Gran Reservas).
Reversing genetic and historical erosion is not only a tale of Garnacha: it also explains Rioja’s ‘White Revolution’ , as well as the exploration of other red varieties.
Mazuelo once again performed well in our tastings, with standout examples really showing the grape’s balance of elegance and rusticity.
And we had a surprising flight of Maturana Tinta wines: a modest but clear prelude of better things to come.
‘There are many really interesting Maturanas, but it is a variety that still has a way to go in terms of finding its identity and a connection with the final consumer,’ concludes Willard.
The wines we tasted suggest that it’s a worthwhile quest.
Garnacha & friends:
Highlights from the 2026 Rioja Report
Garnacha
Sierra de Toloño, Tereseño, Rioja Alta, Spain 2023
Made with fruit from a single-vineyard planted in 1944 at 700m in Labastida, Rioja Alavesa, this is a Garnacha of great definition and refreshing fluidity, with blood orange and clementine zest adding juicy grip. The wine was spontaneously fermented in clay amphorae and kept at a low temperature to encourage slow, gentle and constant extraction, remaining in the amphorae for 12 months before being bottled without fining or filtering. There's great detail in the chiselled, crunchy pomegranate, cranberry, raspberry and strawberry fruit, with an elegant, refined rusticity and an intense frame of tarragon and saffron. So dynamic, with an appetising texture lingering playfully on the palate supported by wet stone minerality. Mountain Rioja in a glass.
El Pacto, Valdechuecas, Rioja Alta, Spain 2022
Sourced from a 1.16ha vineyard at 595m-620m in Cárdenas, in the south of Rioja Alta, with parcels dating back to 1918 and 1912, this wine consists mostly of Garnacha Tinta with small quantities of Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo, Viura, Malvasía and other local varieties. The concrete fermentation tank was filled with 85% destemmed but whole-berry fruit on top of 15% whole bunches, all fermented using indigenous yeasts, and the wine then aged for a year in third-use 2,400L French oak foudres. So expansive on the mid-palate, it's expressive and generous. Beautifiul savoury tannins cloaked in tobacco, wet soil, Turkish coffee and Earl Grey over an unctuous bed of black olive tapenade. Still a baby, it will benefit from time in bottle to come into its own. Long finish, with a long tail of tapenade, oregano, saffron and roasted pepper. Delicious. Organic.
Victor Ausejo, Garnacha Tinta, Rioja Oriental, Spain 2023
Seductive vividness and mountain intensity frame ripe orchard fruit. Upfront juiciness balanced by precision and edge with tingling peppery notes, turmeric, saffron and tomato leaf, underpinned by intense earthiness of wet soil and leaves. So characterful and approchable, drinking beautifully now but with a long life in bottle ahead. Very long, with lingering white and pink pepper, nutmeg and cardamom. The 100% Garnacha Tinta fruit is from one site planted in 1950 and four other microparcels, at 700m-800m in Sojuela, southwest of Logroño in Rioja Alta. Only organic fertiliser is used and no herbicide, with minimal working of the soil. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks was followed by malolactic and maturation lasting 12 months in French oak barrels of 600L, 500L and 225L in size.
Bodegas Muro, Majada de Reyes, Rioja Alta, Spain 2022
This is a 100% Garnacha wine from a single hectare of vines, some dating back to 1904, planted at 630m in the foothills of the Sierra de Moncalvillo in Rioja Alta. After detailed selection of the fruit, the grapes were fermented slowly in stainless steel tanks, then the wine transferred to French oak barrels, where it completed malolactic fermentation and matured for 16 months. It fills the palate with luscious yet refreshing plum, pomegranate and red cherry fruit. Appetising texture is built upon mouthwatering zestiness – blood orange, pink grapefruit. Such an energetic, dynamic wine, with so much vividness and bright, juicy fluidity throughout. The tannins are drenched in cranberry and sour cherry juice. A long life ahead of it.
Casa La Rad, Edición Especial Garnacha, Rioja Oriental, Spain 2021
All Garnacha, grown on bush vines at 535m-640m in Ausejo, Rioja Oriental, where the wine was fermented in open, 500L French oak barrels followed by 12-14 months in 225L barrels, 50% new. Mineral, cooling nose of wet stone, redcurrant, red plum and wild flowers. Well-honed, refreshing tannins. Appealing rusticity with forest floor and wet leaves over plum, sloe and strawberry. The pure, fluid fruit core carries the wine with ease through to its blood orange juice-drenched finish.
Reditus, 23 Reales, Rioja Alta, Spain 2023
A wine that deftly balances pretty aromatics and serious structure, this is made from Garnacha grown in Cordovín, southern Rioja Alta. The grapes are fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks, then the wine is transferred to 225L French oak barrels for malolactic and six months of maturation before bottling, unfiltered. It presents perfumed notes of rose, violets and red cherry, alongside broody forest floor and wild herbs. With ripe but firm tannins and direct, driven acidity, it is built to last but already offers very appealing sapidity. Lovely Garnacha that reflects its origins.
Vinos en Voz Baja, Nace la Sierra, Rioja Oriental, Spain 2024
A blend of 70% Garnacha with 20% Tinto Velasco and 10% Pasera, this is sourced from a single site in Calahorra, Rioja Oriental, and the wine is fermented in concrete tanks using whole bunches and native yeasts before ageing for eight months in oak barrels. Intense earthiness and seductive florality mingle on the nose. Dry rose petals and wildflowers over poached cherry and juicy cranberry, a hint of graphite and salty liquorice on the rims. Fluid core, framed by mineral freshness, infused in cherry leaves and thyme. Unpretentious purity. Enjoy slightly chilled.
Mazuelo
Miguel Merino, La Quinta Cruz, Rioja Alta, Spain 2023
On the southeast slope of Calvario hill in Briones, Rioja Alta, La Quinta Cruz was planted in 1986 – a steep 1.2ha vineyard with very thin topsoil of sand and gravel covered by round pebbles. This 100% Mazuelo wine was fermented in a small stainless-steel tank, then underwent malolactic fermentation in three 500L French oak barrels and one 1,300L concrete tank, where it remained for 12 months. Fine, cool tannins – linear and citrus juice-drenched – support the juicy tomato jam, red cherry and blackberry pie flavour. Unexpected touches of quince, guava and rhubarb add intrigue and dynamism. A benchmark, characterful expression of Mazuelo showing remarkable focus and purity of fruit.
Arizcuren, SoloMazuelo, Rioja Oriental, Spain 2024
Beautiful definition, transparency and edge. Fluid cranberry, pomegranate, red plum, red cherry and red apple framed by poised, slaty tannins drenched in spring water and sprinkled adundantly with sage, tarragon and coriander. Long savoury finish. The 100% Mazuelo fruit was sourced from two sites at 530m and 600m on the eastern slopes of the Sierra de Yerga in Rioja Oriental. The wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts and underwent malolactic in 15% new, 500L French oak barrels, where it remained to age for 12 months.
El Hombre Orquesta, 666 M, Rioja Alavesa, Spain 2023
Dangerously drinkable, layering fragrant parma violet, red cherry, red plum and red apple. The 100% Mazuelo fruit is from a 40-year-old vineyard in Briñas, just north of Haro, and is destemmed but not crushed before fermentation in a 1,300L dairy vat, with the wine then transferred to large oak bocoy casks for malolactic and maturation of 12-15 months, depending on how it develops. On the mid-palate, it presents its fleshy weight with both ease and assertiveness, driven by a moreish grip. Crunchy appetising core and such juicy texture throughout. A touch of spice on the finish. Hard to put down.
Maturana Tinta
Florentino Martínez, Maturana Tinta, Rioja Alta, Spain 2022
This family-run winery in Rioja Alta sources its grapes from its own vineyards in Cordovín and those of trusted suppliers. This 100% Maturana red is partially fermented in stainless steel tanks, completing the process and malolactic in oak barriques, where it remains for nine months of maturation. It's a delicious example of the variety that also reflects the warmer 2022 vintage. Ripe red berry fruit combines with leafy freshness, carob and cocoa notes, and a touch of mint. A wine that combines ripe fruit and stucture and firm, sappy tannins.
Marqués de Cáceres, La Halconera, Rioja, Spain 2022
Major producer Marqués de Cáceres sources Maturana from vines more than 60 years old growing on the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria in Rioja Alta. The wine is fermented without pressing or crushing of the grapes, using native yeasts and gentle pumping-over. Malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels, followed by about 18 months' maturation in new and second-uses barrels. Chocolate and carob mingle with minty eucaplyptus and graphite notes from well-judged oak. Firm structure and tannins are balanced by ripe fruit and strong varietal character. Black forest gateau, raspberry and woody spicy notes create a bold and powerful wine with direct, vertical acidity. Will develop gradually over time.
